My Kitchen: Before and After

While thinking about what to post today, my own kitchen came to my mind.  Since we're soon moving to another country (Sao Paulo) I feel it would be great to show how I renovated our kitchen. The picture above shows how our kitchen was before.  Very unattractive!  We teared down everything, from the cabinets to the walls, got rid of that double tray ceiling and redid the floor.  My vision was to create something charming instead of modern because this house was built around the 80's when there was absolutely no reference whatsoever to any period architecture.  So I decided it would look like something between old and au courant.
I wanted the Ikea cabinets to go all the way up to the ceiling so I had the extra open boxes custom made and installed mirror in the back.  I also added crown moldings to make them look more custom.  These cabinets don't really need handles but I decided to install them anyway for the same purpose.  I was happy when I found this kind of porcelain mosaic for a great price at a place called The tile shop.  If you didn't, know the smaller the pieces the more expensive the mosaic, that's why  the places that offer more affordable tiles usually only have mosaic of one inch.  This one is little less than 3/4" which makes it look more like the real thing.

Kitchen of the week: Top Brass Kitchen

This kitchen is small in size but big in style and originality.  I love the combination of materials and color, the stove and the use of brass throughout.  I also love how the walnut contrast with the white.  Lovely indeed.  Enjoy!

Kitchen of the week -Perfectly Mediterranean

This beautiful summery kitchen immediately transports me to a far away spot under the Mediterranean sun where the days are long and warm, and everything seems and appears to be easier and leisurable.  Enjoy!

Kitchen of the week: A Miles Redd Kitchen

This kitchen designed by Miles Redd for a family in Connecticut is in the July issue of Architectural Digest.  I love how the blue of the walls and wood color of the cabinets contrast each other.  Enjoy!
Sorry about my iPhone photo.

Kitchen of the week: Kichens with TVs

Many people have a sort of TV aversion.  Kind of like the TV will slowly morph into their brains,  brain wash them, and wake up the next day as an even worse person.  Let's not forget that BALANCE! is a very, if not the most, important word in life.  I'm even guilty of turning it on and keeping it on while I work from home sometimes.  We all have an annoying friend who does not shut up but we don't want to live without, that's TV for me.  It keeps me company a lot!
TVs in the kitchens are loved by children and maids (hello soap operas) in countries where house help is affordable. Enjoy!
Herringbone floors and a minimalist kitchen island= perfect for a bachelor.
I'm not sure if this is a TV in this kitchen but it looks like one.
I love the red in this kitchen where the TV is attached to the upper cabinets.
A glam kitchen also needs some company.

Kitchen of the week designed by Isabel Lopez Quesada

This kitchen I came across with is from a newly constructed farm house in Spain that Isabel Lopez Quesada created together with architect Pablo Carvajal.  It's hard to guess that this kitchen with that old and graciously run down feel is newly constructed.  There are many obvious elements that help create the ambiance of old, from the reclaimed wood-plank floor, the classic bin cabinet pulls to the curved over sized range hood.  I love the details of the rivets on the stainless steel backsplash.  The range is Lacanche.  Enjoy

Kitchen of the week: Completely open ones

Ever since kitchens became the center of the house, meaning that they are usually literally in the middle of the house.  More often in homes or apartments with an open floor plan, they are looking less and less like a kitchen.  Leaving upper walls empty of cabinets that could make the space feel cramped or closed in and instead making them a focal point by using beautiful stones or tiles, adding sconces, art and many other things that before were more commonly used in other rooms of the house.  I like this new recent trend, I like the idea of making the kitchen part of the decor of the house, if living in a place where the kitchen is open. Enjoy!
GLAM!
A very minimalist and rustic kitchen.  Love the stove.
 This kitchen is too cute!
Love the home school feel of this kitchen.
This kitchen is simple but it's very clean and organized.
