Rago Auctions, in conjunction with The Apthorp showcased a curated exhibit of modern 20th C. items that were soon to be put up for auction. I thought this was a clever way of viewing the lots of furniture and art, in a more realistic setting, similar to your home, and not on a display shelf. You might be more likely to connect with something, thereby being more apt to bid on it ~ and bid HIGH! I did not have a catalog with me during the viewing, honestly, I had no idea what some of the pieces were worth. I had hoped to go to this particular auction, but I was away. These are some of the results:
estimate $6,500.00 - $8,500.00
SOLD - $16,250.00
NOT SOLD
Buying at auction can be a great way of procuring things that you may not be able to afford new, adding an important item to a collection or just having fun and getting an education. Vise versa, if you have a quality piece that you are thinking of selling, why not consider consigning it?
estimate $20,000.00- $30,000.00
SOLD $17,500
Feliciano Bejar Sculpture, crystal & steel
SOLD $6,250.00 & $5,938.00
George Nakashima bench
SOLD $36,250.00
SOLD $17,500.00
Gene Sherer torso jewelry chest
SOLD $8,125.00
SOLD $5,635.00
SOLD $32,500.00
SOLD $2,875.00
Most people think of auctions as being intimidating (I did before I tried it) ~ but they're not, as long as you have an understanding of how they work. You can really have FUN with them! Become familiar with the terms/conditions of the auction house you are interested in and jump right in. What have you got to lose? Nothing but $$$!
